During the trial, a single dose of psilocybin was given to each patient, used in conjunction with psychotherapy. The result were promising – patients experienced a decrease in their depression and anxiety, and this was after just one shot of the chemical.
Another study undertaken by King’s College London looked into how psilocybin could be used to treat depression. They used 89 healthy volunteers to take part, and those who took high doses of psilocybin experienced psychedelic effects, but with no long lasting effects to their cognitive or emotional functions. These patients also hadn’t responded well to conventional therapy, so psilocybin was introduced to see if it proved more effective.
Psilocybin and Addiction
Another interesting area where psilocybin could be beneficial is tackling addiction. A Johns Hopkins Center study showed that patients who took psilocybin pills in addition to cognitive therapy were highly likely to stop smoking. 80% of participants stopped smoking within the first six months of the trial and two and a half years later, 60% had still managed to abstain from picking up the habit again.
